I want to buy a scooter/moped but I don't know much about them.?

Q: I live in New York City and I commute by bus and subway but the waiting time and crowd is quite bothersome.
I don't have enough for a car so a scooter seems reasonable; especially when driving around in the city.
The problem is: I know absolutely nothing about them and what brand is good or just anything. I want one that doesn't exceed 40 or 50 miles per hour since I'm never getting on a highway, a two seater would be nice, a reasonable price is appreciated..

Of course I'm going to learn more about them when I go to the DMV for a license but just for pre planning, I just want to know what a nice scooter would be.

A: 50cc go about 40 and do not require a motorcycle license or insurance. anything bigger does. I have a 50cc and a 150cc and love the gas mileage from both. go to a honda dealer and check them out. Or another brand, I know Yamaha makes them too :)
