What are some cheap, safe cars I could get?

Q: I'm 17, and I can't take my car with me when I go to college this fall (it's not technically my car).

I think my parents will help me pay for another one, but it would have to be cheap. I mean like a used car, even an older car. Any suggestions? I'm thinking a hatchback would be nice. But I'll go for anything cheap and decent quality.
