A: Well, first you will have to review a few rules of grammar. OK? The first letter of the first word in a sentence is always capitalized. The pronoun, I, is also always capitalized no matter where it is in the sentence. Then, dollar numbers either have the $ symbol ahead of the figure ($19,000 or 19,000 dollars). Any number figure must be identified as to what is is. You state 15,000 but fail to identify it as miles. And you have only one sentence when there are a few. So, this is what you should have written: I want to buy a used 2008 ACCURA TL type S, with less than than 15,000 miles. But, all I see, are price $19,000 or more. I can't (a contraction requires an apostrophe)spend too (not to) much on a car because it is going to my first one. I want the Acura. Now, is that better and clear? So wish to buy an used luxury car that you apparently love and would like to have but you cannot afford the current market value. Well, guess what? All you have to do is wait about 3 more years and then the car will have depreciated to around $15,000 and then you can buy it. Ta-dah!!! So you see, there is hope for you. What are the best used cars to buy and use for no more than a year (to resell)?

A: Whatever you can get without loosing money.

The most important thing to consider is how easy it will be to sell. You can get some pretty interesting cars for a few thousand dollars, such as a Porsche 944. I'm sure driving a Porsche sounds more tempting than a Civic, but when it comes time to get rid of it you'll be regretting it because it will be much harder to sell. There is a very small market for cars like that. Something like a Honda Civic is ideal, because there is always strong demand for cars like that.

The next thing you have to consider is how good of a deal you can get. I wouldn't be looking for a specific model, but rather what car I can get for the most under blue book value. Don't bother with dealers if you want the best deal you can get. I'd search through the private sellers on Craigslist. There are some VERY good deals on CL. It's where I got my car for $2-3K under the private party value it would usually get. But perhaps the best way to break even or make money is to go to an auction. It's where dealers get a lot of cheap used cars, which they then resell. You'll be able to find an auction in any major city, and auction companies usually have them 1-2 times per week. You're ensured a good deal. Just go down one day, inspect the cars before bidding, and buy something in running condition.

A: Depends on what was towed and how often.

Towing a boat to the lake 6-8 times a year isn't going to materially harm a car.

If they were towing something heavy nearly all 80,000 miles, it might be a different story.

Not sure an 05 honda with 80k is worth $12k.

Q: So ive been looking into a dirt bike but im just starting so im guna get a souly starter bike ... Im unfamiler with dirtbikes when it comes to size and quality but ive been looking at a bike called the ssr 125cc and it looks alright to start but idk if it is big enough idk whats a good size for a bike but it sais its like 5 feet long and a 14 inch front tire idk if this is too small or just right im 5 foot 9 inchs and weigh about 165 if this is a good size please do tell if this is and if not can you sugest a more apropiatly sized one only thing is im only willing to spend about 500 ya i know its not much for a dirt bike but some sell for that much , thanks in advance

A: Stay away from the $500 bikes, they are made in China and fall apart instantly. You will be better off taking $500 and burning it then buying a $500 Chinese dirtbike then having to fork out money to dispose of the bike 3 months later when the frame cracks in half and the foot pegs fall off.

If all you want to spend is $500 you will be better off buying a mountain bike. You may be able to find a decent used bike for around $1,000 to $1,500 if you look hard enough.

If you want a cheap bike to start out on look for a used Honda XR 200 or Yamaha RT 180, those bikes are easy to come by and are well built compared to any Chinese bikes.

A: My sister bought a 97 Jeep Cherokee off Craigslist for $800 a few years ago that she had until she traded up for a newer model. It never gave her any problems but that may have been because the previous owner took very good care of it and so did she. I've known plenty of people who've gotten cars for between $1,000 and $1,200 so it's not impossible.

They're are a lot of people out there with ancient Honda's and little driven Towncars belonging to dead relatives and such who'd be willing to sell for a decent price, you just have to know where to look and it never hurts to have a mechanic friend or family member go with you to a sale.

Try to stay away from police auctions and impound/tow-yard auctions and the like because rare is the day that a good car goes for anything less than $2000 and they often come with a lot of problems.

Try to find "salvage title" cars. Those cars are difficult to insure and most times they've changed hands several times because of this sometimes with little driving in between because of this. A salvage title car is one that has been severely damaged or otherwise deemed totaled or no longer uninsurable by an insurance company. This can be tricky because generally means the vehicle was in an accident bad enough to get the car 'totaled out' however that doesn't necessarily mean it's undrivable or even in that bad of a condition.

My own car is a salvage title that I got insured through AIS quite cheaply. Most people sell salvage title cars because it's very difficult to get insured but that usually only applies to full coverage. Most people aren't comfortable having anything less than full coverage and therefore end up cutting their losses and selling altogether. Personally I was eligible for full coverage however I have limited liability which is fine because I'm a student on a major budget.

1998 BMW 528i Question?

Q: What are these cars like, I'm thinking of buying either a 1998 523i or a 528i in around a year or so and depending whats around with a full service history and that's in good condition with under 80,000 miles.

Are there any known faults with this car or are they generally very reliable if looked after?
Or know where to get them, I'd never get any parts from BMW because they don't make half the things in those cars, they always get contractor companies to make parts, then BMW stick their badge on them.

In Lincoln UK which is around 40 miles from me, there is a place called GSF (German, Swedish, French) and they sell aftermarket parts and bloody good prices so that's covered:P

wow that's good at least lol, I'm confident with the engine because I've seen them in Australia that hit 300,000 miles and still going strong but we'll have to wait and see lol

I also found a nice 528i SE on autotrader with 67,000 miles for £1,450 and is a manual, also are there any special requirements on engine oil or just use a good synthetic from Castrol, Silkolene, Comma and so on.
EDIT: also another car I'd like to get in around 2-3 years and I know they will be getting quite old, but does it count with a 2001-2002 BMW 740i Sport as well, I've tried to find any manuals but as far as I know, they never made manual E38's.

A: Well Fox, I'm a car enthusiast so you might not like my two cents worth on this subject but...
Considering European is fine accepting the conclusion that they are not Lexus or Acura in most cases. Im a fan of amazing M models, v8 M3 models in particular!
European care requires regular/expen$ive service procedures utilizing BMW techs for codes, more expensive parts/supplies, synthetic oils, dot 4 brake, premium petro, and crossed drilled rotors to deliver the high performance that BMW is known to the world for. In exchange for this they usually deliver higher performance and life. They have the potential of being reliable if you pour money into them which is definitely not the case seen usually.
You seemed to have noticed a considerable amount on used car lots. After about five years or so they start needing replacement part$$$$$$$ and you thought the maintenance was bad.
Check and re-check that the automatic transmissions were serviced or replaced because this and Electronics seem to be "problematic area " after five years if not sooner. You couldn't pay me to be in your shoes if the BMW I Drive multi-controls need replacement/service $$$$$$$$. That being said, finding a good low mileage example that was meticulously maintained is a diamond in the rough. ENJOY !

The BMW E 38 was for all practical purposes the Flagship "Bimmer". If ever the term COMPLEXITY was described this is one of those vehicles. It was offered with auto and manumatic transmissions, the manual you will have better luck finding in Europe like getting hit with a "meteorite" ... it's possible. The top of the line model offered a V12 that was shared with the Rolls Royce Silver Seraph.

EDIT: Early 7 series 88 - 89 735i were available with factory manual transmissions in Europe, but not installed on V8's. Here's a included link to a few who have successfully installed them.

EDIT: If you can Utilize a personal mechanic knowledgeable with BMW codes and schematics this will help considerably in the wallet dept. Do avoid BMW I Drives like the Plague, and pick my personal favorite ...a manual 6 speed simple fact less complexity in less moving parts vs complexity in clutchless transmission applications, paddle shifters ,and automatic transmissions.

S2k vs. Evo 8, what should i get?

Q: I understand asking strangers about what car i get next isn't the greatest idea, but i want to hear some stories from both sides. Basically ive narrowed my choices down to an ap1 s2000 and an evo 8 (most likely a 2003 or 2004).

Im around both of these cars almost every day, about half my friends have s2k's and the other half have evos. What it comes down to in my opinion, is what car can i have fun in ALL year around (i live in maryland so the winters can get messy), what car is most practical, and which car will give me the least amount of problems. I know every ones like "shoulda bought a honda" because of their reliability, but being on s2k forums all day, makes me realize that a lot of people have problems with their s.

s2000
pros- convertible (fun), nimble, responsive, more reliable, cheaper, great handling, can get an ap1 for $10k
cons- diff problems, gear problems, not practical (convertible)

evo
pros- stock turbo, handling, aggressive looking, more practical (4 doors with normal sized trunk)
cons- transfer case problems, clutch problems, not reliable, not a convertible, have to spend atleast $15k to get one with under 100k miles on it

My s2k friends are telling me, "get an s2000 their more fun" and evo friends are saying "get an evo their More fun"
I realize they are both fun, but in two completely different categories.
I just dont want to get one and regret it and wished i got the other. Again, if you guys have personal stories, any like "i used to own an s2k and now i own an evo" or the other way around, i was thinking about just getting an evo 8, spend some money for maintenance (new gaskets, belts, replace all fluids) and a couple bolt ons, id rather have a 300hp evo that runs and is reliable, than a 650hp evo that breaks every day, i feel like i should get an s2k farther down the road when i have enough money to buy a dd, because all my friends tell me you CAN NOT drive an s in the snow, ive drove with them before and if they hit the smallest patch of ice, the whole car is sideways instantly.

I would appreciate it if anyone can actually help me and not say "just get what you want" because im obviously on the fence between these two, thanks for anyone that can help :)

A: Depends on what you want. They both have the same aftermarket potential and are quick stock. The evo is faster though. I can could beat s2000 around BIR all day with my old gsx, but then again it comes down to the drivers ability.

You'll expect to pay more for maintenance on the evo because of the turbo system and stress and abuse you'll push onto the engine. The most noted is timing belts ware fast on 4g63's so you'll change these often. Stock evo's are as reliable as s2000's. It's when people mod them they turn into money buckets. The way an evo was build is so sophisticated that if you change anything it requires the ecu to be flashed otherwise the car will turn unstable and you'll lose power.

Depends on what your want, turbo or na? The power potential of the evo surpasses the s2000 to an extent. To upgrade the evo would be "cheaper" then the s2000. The s2000 will hit a limit of power without turboing it, but the s2000 has the advantage of no turbo lag and better throttle response of course. If you were comparing an sti to a evo that would be a better compassion since they are almost identical it just comes down to fine engineering. Also, for snow wise, I drove my 240 in MN winter last year which as you can imagine was as worse as yours and it was tough even with 300lbs of sand in the trunk but I still got around.....just was sideways the whole time hehe. Point being, both of these cars can be driven in snow just wouldn't recommend it becuase of the salt on the roads (if that's what they use in the land of mary)

neither, but if you want to get financially f*cked in the butt by a dealership, then go for it.

the Infinity, a product of nissan (imma bet you had no idea) will break when you drive off the lot. The acura isnt bad, but for the same price you could buy a used Subaru Impreza WRX STI or Mitsubishi Evo MR or Mustang Cobra R or anything that is SO MUCH BETTER!!!!

but like i said, between both pitiful cars, the acura.

Q: I live in New York City and I commute by bus and subway but the waiting time and crowd is quite bothersome.
I don't have enough for a car so a scooter seems reasonable; especially when driving around in the city.
The problem is: I know absolutely nothing about them and what brand is good or just anything. I want one that doesn't exceed 40 or 50 miles per hour since I'm never getting on a highway, a two seater would be nice, a reasonable price is appreciated..

Of course I'm going to learn more about them when I go to the DMV for a license but just for pre planning, I just want to know what a nice scooter would be.

A: 50cc go about 40 and do not require a motorcycle license or insurance. anything bigger does. I have a 50cc and a 150cc and love the gas mileage from both. go to a honda dealer and check them out. Or another brand, I know Yamaha makes them too :)

New throwout bearing noise?

A: You might have a bad input shaft bearing. Press the clutch in and if the noise goes away it's the input shaft bearings. They are not too complicated to replace and they're pretty cheap. Less than 50$ over the counter at your Honda dealer. It's not impossible to have a brand new throwout bearing be bad but highly improbable. Check the warranty on your part if that truly is the case.

What is a good first motorcycle?

Q: I'm looking to buy my 1st motorcycle this summer.

Really it just needs to be something good looking that'll get along pretty good (120mph around there).

I can do any mechanic work on my own - I work on cars all the time.

I can also drive stick shift so manual transmissions are no issue for me.

Any suggestions? I'm not looking to break the bank so used is a must

A: The 120 mph is getting you a lot of flak. 8^) Actually a 'beginner' motorcycle and a 120 mph bike are seen as two separate sets. But almost any medium-sized bike these days can do 120, or almost. Just a regular motorcycle these days usually has 100 hp, which is WAY more than you need, A hot bike, a muscle bike, might have the power to weight ratio of an F18.

The thing is, you have to learn to crawl before you learn to fly. Half of all motorcycle accidents happen to riders with less than a year's experience, so safety should be one of your main considerations in starting out. That doesn't mean you can't start on a bike that does 120 mph, assuming you're grown up enough to use the power wisely. Motorcycles are the closest you'll ever come to flying, and I don't mean like flying in an airplane, I mean flying like Superman,. It turns guys' heads! I really think the accident statistics are skewed by young guys suffering from 'testosterone poisoning'.

So anyway yeah, you want to start on a used bike because you're likely to drop it once or twice, and to abuse the clutch before you get the feel of it (not so bad for you 'cos you know how a clutch works already).

I would strongly advise you stay away from the hot sportbikes for you first bike. CBR, GSX-R, ZX, R1/R6. They're wonderful machines for what they are but they're not easy to ride, not forgiving for beginners. It's not a matter of 'too much power', it's the kind of bike.

You want to start on a 'standard'. Honda 599, Kawasaki Ninja 500 or 650, Suzuki GS500 or SV650. All the Japanese brands are very good--well engineered, reliable, long lived, economical. They are the best deal for the money. BMW and Harley are also very nice but EXPENSIVE.

Or, if you don't mind a cruiser, Honda Shadow, Kawasaki Vulcan, Yamaha Star. On a cruiser you could start on a 750, because they carry their weight lower so they're easier to manage for their size. Cruisers are not super-hot though. I don't know if any medium-sized ones would do 120. Really, though, how often are you going to do 120?

You should be able to get a nice medium-sized used bike around $2500-3000. Check out your local Craigslist.

Maintenance Costs for different cars?

For the budget I have, i like the 98-00 bmw's and audi's but i'm wondering just how much more maintenance costs(not just basic stuff like oil change but if the car needs repair) are for these makes as opposed to something like a honda civic or toyota. any examples or knowledge would be appreciated.

A: The older a car gets, the more things wear out. So as time goes on the figures become worse. Now a BMW will cost at least twice as much a year to fix and being ten years old it will be having things starting to go wrong a quick rate. The Honda is known for reliability and if it is like my Mazda products most of the original parts will still be doing a good job longer then you will care to own it. Meaning things like starters and alternators.
Audi cars are not as good as BMW's for long term owner ship.
You need to realize how often the average Audi or BMW owner keeps a car for, it is designed to keep them happy for about three to five years at most and then behave in such a way that it encourages the owner to replace it. They are very good at this.
While a Honda Civic owner will tend to either own the car till it drops or pass it on to another family member or friend (knowing it should continue to be a good car for at least another five or more years).
Me, I drive Mazda products. Every one of them is over 20 years old and I am not about to sell them yet. Still cheap to maintain and fix. Problem is very little breaks and need repaired. Kind of boring for some one who loves getting their hands dirty and mechanics hate them too because there is not enough that goes wrong with one to help them keep the doors open.

A: It's been afew years since I worked at Honda but I think its.

Hit the select rest knob till it gets to the percent part, where it says the % till the next maintenance
Turn the key to off.
Hold down the select reset black knob, in the instrument cluster.
Turn the key to KOEO Key on engine off, ( don't start the car) While continuing to hold the knob down
Hold the knob down for like about a minute off until the % (percent till the next maintenance) will start flashing

Once it starts flashing, take you hand off the select reset button for a couple seconds, then hold the button again until it resets to 100%.

Im pretty sure this is it. Like I said it's been a couple years since I worked at Honda and some of the reset procedures are a little different for different models. Hope that helps :D

A: I'm currently 16 as well, and have been riding a 50cc moped for the last year. I've bought my big bike and am about to take my full bike test next month!

If you only want a 125 at the minute, all you need to do test-wise is pass your CBT (compulsory basic training) which costs around £100 including bike hire, protection, fuel, and everything else. If you pass that (and you will, I passed mine alongside a guy who'd never ridden a bicycle before, let alone a bike) then you can ride your 125 with L plates, without taking any more tests.

Regarding insurance, you'd probably be best going with third party fire and theft. Use "thebikeinsurer" website to find the best quote you can.

Third party fire and theft means that anyone or anything you hit will be covered, but you also get the protection of your bike being stolen or damaged by fire. If you want to be able to claim if you fall off going round a bend and damage your bike, you'll have to pay for "comprehensive" insurance which will cover you if you damage your bike yourself. However, it does cost a lot more, and will probably be in the region of £700 to £1300 a year, depending on what bike you get. The most basic (and cheapest) insurance is third party only, which will only protect other peoples property if you damage it. If someone hits you and it is completely their fault, any damage to your bike will be paid for, regardless of what insurance type you have (this is rarely the case as not many people actually admit when they are at fault).

You should apply for your provisional lisence around now, so that it arrives in time for you to take your CBT. Go onto the DVLA website and fill out their form. It costs £50, but will also entitle you to drive a car with L plates if you have someone who has passed their test in the passenger seat.

To tax your bike, you will need to go to a post office, or do it online. You will need proof of insurance and your MOT certificate. The V5 document (contains all the vital information about the bike and its owners) may also be asked for. It cost me £15 for the whole year to tax my 50cc.

I personally would never buy a new bike at a young age. Chances are it will get scratched or damaged it your first year of riding. If you are careful, you should be alright. There are plently of advertisements out there for used bikes, just take your time and find a good deal for a reputable make. It took me 2 months to find my scooter, and I've made a profit out of it, even with me using it all year. It took me even longer to find my big bike. Make sure it has a MOT, V5 document, full service history and no deep rust anywhere. Tax is not essential. Any surface rust can be easily taken off and then treated to prevent it happening again.

There are lots of good bikes in the 125 range. I'm going to have to hire one to take my full bike test on. Looking for a CBF, a CG or a YBR. The "sporty" 125 bikes are useless in my opinion. All looks and no real power, and the noise they make is horrible.

For £2500 you should be able to get a pretty decent bike. Spend a lot of time looking around, and get a friend (who knows a lot about bikes) to tell you whether it is a good bike or not. Just remember you also need to insure it, tax it, and pay for fuel and maintenance. You should also look into getting some decent protective gear, can you imagine falling off at 50mph in a t-shirt and shorts?

A: No one should criticize you, should be proud you're so hardworking.

Anyway for 10,000 no doubt a Honda Civic comes into mind. If you're looking for power, then stay away from that.

Mustang is a good deal, they're relatively affordable. You'll get a nice one for 10,000.

Acura RSX is also something to look at. Stock is okay, once you hook it up a little, it can hold it's own in terms of accel and hp. One of my personal favorites, you'll be able to get a 2006 model.

If you just want looks, mitsubishi eclipse. You can get a 2006 model, with maybe 50,000 miles. It'll last you and it's lightweight. Good accel, not a lot of HP but if you get the v4 it'll be good on gas.

Nissan 350z. This is if you're really looking for that power. Best you'd get is a 2003, 80,000 miles if you get manual. It's only a 2 seater and was made for sheer power.

I find the Audi TT to look like a female car. It's an audi so you'll be getting an older model. 2003 at most. But it's definitely very sporty.

Now if you're going ONLY for looks, get the mazda RX 8. It is a good car, the newer ones that is. Mazda is improving on their quality. The power is on the low side but it has all the looks you could want for a great price.

Also if you've heard of a brand called Scion, it was made by Toyota for college students. Who want something that looks nice and has great mpg. So check out the Scion TC. It has a lot of capabilities, very affordable as well.

Finally another good choice is a Hyundai Tiburon. You can get a 2007 model, with low miles for 10,000. It looks like a monster, with very nice accel and mpg. HP is a little low but thats okay.

1) The other driver pays the ticket without realizing that. other than the make and color of the car, none of the information matches their vehicle. If THAT happens, your friend gets away with it.

2) The other driver actually reads the ticket and discovers that the license plate number is wrong, as is the location of the offense. Then they throw the ticket out and your friend may not know about the problem ... until they go to renew their registration or license!

A: SMARTY PANTS!!! Take $20 to your local quicky lube, and ASK them to clean your THROTTLE BODY and IAC valve. That is the IDLE AIR CONTROL valve. The IAC is the HEART of your fuel mixture, idling and fuel mixture CONTROL. It accepts signals genrated by your O2 sensors and fine tune the mix!!! Your check engine system is TELLING your that your fuel mixture is going south, OR that you are using IMPROPER engine oil in your engine. Only engine oil that has the name HONDA on it should EVER be used. NO BULK oils soming from the ceiling of the jiffy lubes. Your engine will simply NOT work it's BEST without synthetic engine oil, like MOBIL ONE 0W-30. Go to the HONDA dealer if you have to but GET THE T. BODY and IAC cleaned up to SHOWROOM clean. Otherwise you risk converter and O2 premature failures or severe clogging up. IF this does NOT help, GET TO THE HONDA DEALER before something EXPENSIVE breaks for you!!! WHO did the timing belt??? Only GENUIN HONDA coolant can be used in your engine, and NOTHING less! there are LOTS of uninformed mechanics out there that really know NOTHING about the consequences of their material choices and OTHER things on down the ROAD!!! A: It's the radio antenna.

Used to be, all cars had radio antennae that were long and thin. At one time they would be mounted on the front fender, sticking straight up, then later they migrated to the roof, where they were 'swept back' and retractable, at least to some degree. Then some car makers started embedding them, in the form of thin wires, in the windshield. But some makers still mount them on the roof. The antenna-embedded-in-windshield idea is a neat solution to the problem of antenna breakage, but it sure makes it a lot more expensive to replace a windshield, when you get a crack.

[The model in your pic is Hyundai's copycat of the Honda Fit, which I have. The antenna on my Fit is in the same place as on that Hyundai, only on mine, it is stubbier.]

A: Si means Sport Injected. Meaning that the car is built for Speed than for Fuel Efficiency like the Honda's Ex, Dx, and Lx, Trim models. Similar to the Type R or the Chevrolet's SS or the Dodge's SRT. It just means that its built to go faster than all the other trim models. Hope that helps.

A: subaru is a real good car... the awd in them is one of the best around. honda's arent as good... the insurance in a honda would actually be more then a subaru.. as hondas are the number one most stolen vehicle in america. i would honestly try looking at a hyandai or something like that... they are just as good of cars as hondas.. but much cheaper... you will be able to get a car about 3 years newer with 30000 or so less miles as what you would spend for a honda. dont get me wrong.. hondas are good cars... i sell them for a living... but there are much better values for your money out there

A: If you removed the fuel line before it goes through the fuel filter and its barely getting any fuel you may have a weak fuel pump or pinched fuel line. If you removed it after the fuel filter you may have a clogged filter. When I'm diagnosing a no start at work I do this. Spray alittle starting fluid (not to much a couple sprays only) into the throttle body while someone else tries to start the car. If it starts ok for a few seconds, you know you probably have a fuel issue. If you had a fuel pressure tester you could use that. It will need a special adaptor for honda though. If you do need a fuel pump it they are usually easy to change on honda's. Usually a cap under the back seat or in the trunk so you wont have to drop the tank. Good Luck ! let us know what you find

A: it all depends on if the previous owners kept up on the maintenance. Volkswagens generally require a bit more routine maintenance than your average Honda or Chevy, and most owners are either unaware of this or just negligent. as a result, a LOT of used Volkswagens tend to be complete piles of sh*t that break down on a routine basis. if it's an automatic transmission, i'd definitely steer clear. 90's Volkswagens really didn't have proper automatics and none of them had long lifespans, especially compared to the 5-speed versions. mileage is also a huge factor, which you haven't listed here.

if you're not familiar with these cars, my best advice would be to go find an old Civic. they don't need much attention, they're cheap, good on gas, are insanely reliable, have cheap insurance and cheap repairs.

A: What I am guessing you are misunderstanding is that Subaru offers rates based on the term of the loan. The shorter the term, the better the rate. They give you a lower rate to give them their money faster.

For example - 0.9% financing is likely for a 36 month term loan.
1.9% would be for 48 months.
2.9% would be for 60 months.

A: Well Stefan... your referring to a factory installed "Valet key" which came with the Chevy Corvette ZR-1 for example. Back in 1995 this was the last year for this generation before the '97 redesign. The ZR-1 was thumping out 405 hp to be exact, and included a keyed switch near the shifter. Activating this Valet feature disabled secondary fuel rails giving the driver "only" 200 hp to play with. Not really the sort of car your Dad would want on his INSURANCE ! Installing a programmable fuel switch cut-off for normal gas delivery or even at a particular programed RPM/speed setting is possible.
Messing with extreme de-tuning, back pressures, and the cars ECU will gamble with reliability and drivability. That's not the train you would want to ride. Test drive some of Honda's VTECs you just might be amazed.

Q: Youtube link below. I don't know anything about cars so I simply inspected the interior and exterior and test drove the car for about 10-15 minutes. Every gear works well, 1-5 & reverse. It doesn't feel rough when idling but I noticed the revs were almost at 1.5 in neutral. White smoke was coming out the exhaust but I only noticed it during the smog test. I took outside at night time and there was no visible smoke. The car has always started within a second so I'm not sure why it took so long this one time. Even when its cold, it starts fast. I just bought it so I am paranoid lol.

A: the engine sounds a little rough. i couldnt see the odometer but sure it has a lot of miles. honda motors will run for a very long time if maintained properly. my 94 has almost 300k. if you like the original motor and the power do a swap with another motor form the same year range (96-00); if you want a little more power and better throttle response you can do a b16 swap from a 99-00 si model or another b series motor. make sure the motor is obd2 and you get the computer (ecm) with the motor. there anre really plenty of options for you and fairly easy with plenty of online support and honda enthusiasts within all areas. have any more question add some comments and ill check back.

A: Your Acura already has a more sophisticated cold air intake from the factory than you can afford to buy. Aftermarket cold air intakes *decrease* fuel economy on modern cars by not drawing hot air from around the exhaust during warm-up... engines use twice as much fuel during warm-up as when warm and aftermarket intakes increase the amount of time the engine spends cold. They have also occasionally caused severe engine damage when the car is driven through a puddle. Every once in a while we will see a question about repairing hydro-lock because an aftermarket intake sucked water into the engine.

Aftermarket cold air intakes are relics of the 1960s and 1970s, when most engines drew hot air from above the engine. They are pointless now. The funny thing is I never heard anybody rave about how much more power their car had in winter than in summer. No wonder - I did the calculations a few months back and found that decreasing the air intake temperature 50F had the same effect on intake air density as decreasing the altitude something like 300 ft.

Finally, it is impossible for a cold air intake to improve fuel economy. The claim is based on reduced restriction, but under any conditions except wide open throttle the throttle controls the intake restriction - the intake has exactly zero effect.

A: You have a couple options. Miattas don't have the power you want, but they are an absolute blast to drive, get good mileage, and are really reliable. I had a 2003 with a 5 speed, which took medium grade gas, and got about 28-30 MPG all the time. They do 0-60 ni about 7.5 seconds.

Another option is a 2005-2007 Honda Accord coupe, 6 cylinder, and preferably a 6 speed. They have about 240 HP. I have an 06 (I traded in the Miatta), and I get about 28 MPG on regular gas. 0-60 time is 5.9 seconds, according to Car and Driver.

The Honda doesn't handle as well as the Miatta, but the acceleration is really impressive.

At your 15K price point you could easily get either. Both are quite reliable, and fun in different ways.

A: Go ONLY to the HONDA dealership for these special nuts. They expand and contract at a specific rate and have a PART number. The usual cause for premature exhaust and converter failure is a FUEL mixture that is off kilter. When the engine runs too RICH, it can eat up the O2 sensors and the converter and eat holes through the exhaust gaskets. Keeping your THROTTLE BODY and IAC valve SHOWROOM clean will PREVENT further deterioration! Use a TORQUE wrench to get the proper tension on the NEW HONDA bolts or cap nuts. Any quicky lube can clean the t body and IAC valve for you. Fuel mixture is CRITICAL for exhaust health. THe IAC regulates and fine tunes the incoming fuel/air mixture by adding air from signals from your O2 sensors and signals from teh CPU. GOOD LUCK!!

A: It slides on, just like the last one. As far as actually hooking it up, it depends on the model. On a Honda, the cable hooks up just like one for a bmx bike brake wire. You tighten the black part with a Phillips screwdriver, and make sure the throttle can move freely.

A: Wow.. $600 is high, high, high even for a purchase price. My question to you is, do you think you can sell your car for enough money to pay off your loan? That is your first challenge. How much will it cost you to get out of that car loan with the negative equity?

From there, I would recommend a low-priced, subvented car lease on a practical sedan like a Honda Accord. A subvented lease simply means a really good lease deal. There are some really good ones out there like the Honda Accord, which you can lease for $250 a month and no down payment. Your dealer can roll the negative equity from your car trade-in into a lease like that, but you have to make sure it substantially lowers your payment and makes it worthwhile.

Let's say your negative equity is $4,000 (I have no idea - just guessing).. Take that $4,000 and over a 36 month lease term that will add about $111.00 to your payment: ($4,000/36).. You'd be at $361.00..Still $239.00 lower than what you're paying now. Here are some details on subvented lease deals and the Honda Accord Lease deal which ends first week of February. Check it out.

See website below. (Scosche is the largest distributor of car audio installation hardware in the U.S., although there are others such as Metra.)

Recommended pricing is listed on the website, although these items often have HUGE markups at places like Audio Express and Best Buy. (Both the harness and the kit can't cost more than a buck to manufacture, so better online electronics places like Crutchfield include the parts for free with deck purchase.)

It'd also be a LOT easier if you are replacing the speakers (highly recommended in a car that old) to get the Honda-speaker-plug-to-inline-connector adapters as well.

IS250AWD vs ES350 depreciation?

Q: I drive my car a lot for work/business - about 25k miles/year. I am starting to make some decent money now, and I'm thinking of trading in my 2008 Honda Accord LX-P (i4 engine), which I don't really like because it feels underpowered, it isn't really luxurious, and it doesn't have a rear back-up camera.

I found a 2009 Lexus IS250AWD with built in navigation/backup camera with 22500 miles on it for $25250. At the same dealership, they have a 2009 Lexus ES350 with built in navigation/ backup camera with 17000 miles on it for $24500. They are both off-lease cars that were leased and returned for a new Lexus lease at this Lexus dealership. Anyways, I figure that I will most likely trade-in for a newer car after 2 or 3 years (50k or 75k more miles) if I can. Which car retains its value more? Are they about the same? I'm thinking the IS250AWD might potentially go for a premium here in Connecticut where we have a lot of different weather in the winter.

A: I own a 2009 IS 250 AWD w/ navigation, and I love it. That said, I'm not sure it's the right car for you. A big criticism of the IS250 is the power, which is fairly small for the class. It's a 2.5L engine that produces 204 hp. Not too terribly different than your Honda's 2.4L engine that produces 177 hp, or only about 10% less. The power isn't a big enough differentiator to warrant a whole new car. Likewise, if a back-up camera is important, that's an extremely cheap and easy after-market upgrade for your Honda. They start at about $100 from any electronics big box store.

In terms of depreciation and value retention, roughly the same. Not a differentiator in any case.

The IS250 AWD handles well in snow, but for actually stopping in snow, nothing beats snow tires. I run all seasons on mine, but it will still slide a tad when stopping in snow. I've thought about snow tires, but haven't done it. Snow tires are always better, but yes, you can certainly get away with all seasons. I do.

Back to my original point though......in your situation, I'd probably stand pat. Trading a 2008 for a 2009 just isn't that significant, and of your three stated concerns (power, back-up camera, more luxurious) two of them aren't well addressed through your upgrade. Power is similar and a back-up camera is a $100 add-on, not a whole new car. That's like buying a new house because you didn't like your current front door.

Final thought......think about a Lexus IS 350 AWD. It wasn't available until 2011, but it better addresses your power concerns (over 300 hp) and is significantly newer as compared to what you already have (you're currently only looking 1 year newer) as to make a difference in that regard. If the IS 350 AWD was available when I bought in 2009, it's what I would have got.

We are just visiting him in the US and it is great to have any car to use for the visit.
In Europe where we now live, we bought a used 1986 Citroen, a bit rusty as well , 4 speed, four cylinder, it works for us as we only use it for either short shopping trips or for rides to the lake.
It is a safe care, has to go through safety tests every 2 years in Hungary.
Would rather have my money for other things then sitting in a nice car in traffic.
Have had so many cars over the years, some really nice and some just barely running, as long as we get to where we want to go, it's fine by us.
Had a nice Audi in Budapest a few years back, the Gypsies tried to break in and messed around with the steering wheel, right in broad day light in front of a shop we were in.
2 of my friends in Hungary had their nice cars, one a BMW another a new brought form the US, Honda that had just been redone to EU driving standards stolen right in front of their homes.
We park on the st. in a rather mixed neighborhood of people, no one messes with that old car we have now.
Gasoline, petrol, is around $8. a gallon in HU. We really were happy to find a small car that got good mileage at those prices.
I think we put more mileage on our feet in the city then on the car.

A: Reliability is about average, like all Hondas. I'm not going to hype them, because frankly, I don't see any evidence that they are any more reliable or less reliable than most other automakers.

Buy used if you can find one with really low miles. You can save several thousand dollars by buying used, and you don't lose that money to depreciation as fast.

A: It is according to how you want to approach your next car. The RSX is the luxury line of the Honda Accord, it to me is an overpriced Accord. However the Type S is a bit more powerful and better handling than the normal RSX but is in the same league as the RX-8, much less an RX-7. The transmission is geared differently, the intake and exhaust are modified, all in all a really good vehicle.

The RX-7 is a bit of a different machine according to which model you're talking about. The only one I would say could out perform this vehicle would be the turbocharged models. The naturally aspirated ones are in my opinion very underpowered and I have had friends that continually have to tweek and tune. When it needs serviced only rotary specialized shops should service the engine.

A: I think Honda made more 350 twins than any other model except the 50cc Cub. Try to find a motorcycle salvage yard. They should be full of 350s. Remember, most CB350 models died from failed cam chain tensioners, and you would likely have to make a good one from several junked units.

A: when you disconnect the battery while its running the your breaking the circuit

Some bikes need a battery to run, due to the alternator design and also the use of relays and fuel pump. Alot of bikes that have relays will need at least 9 -10volts in order to have enough power to activate the various relays that would 'lock out ' the engine from starting. 9-10 volts is very low, and you would have to bump start with no lights on. Then there is no guarentee it would start.
Theyre may also be a need for 12volts to the cdi unit.
The only bikes i know that can run without a battery are some offroad bikes and the Honda CG125.. The Honda CG125 uses the generator to power the ignition system and the lighting runs on AC- directl from the generator

A: dont do it. too many miles and the rebuilt title is gonna cause you lots of problems. del sold aren't really great cars. if money is the issue, you can look at integras (acura). they are pretty decent and they're great cars. I drove one in the snow/ice once and it worked great. plus the si vtec is meant for power, I'm sure someone dogged the crap out of it, hence why it has a rebuilt title.

A: It really should have genuine Honda ATF, but ordinary Dexron will work in a pinch (it just makes shifting harsher, less so if you are just adding a little). It will take about half a quart - a pint - to bring it up to full. It is poured down the dipstick tube with a funnel.

A: We get this question here a lot. 8^) A lot of people here think you should start on a 250, because it's smaller, lighter, easier to handle. And there's something to that idea. The problem is that a 250 can't really cruise at highway speeds. Yes, it will top out at 75 mph (on a good day) but they're not really safe or comfortable at that speed. OTOH it's all the motorcycle you'll ever need, up to about 50 mph. So it depends on how you see yourself riding.

Now 600cc is s standard racing category so most 600cc bikes are dedicated sportbikes, almost like racing bikes with license plates. This is not a good choice for the beginner. 'Real' sportbikes are not easy to ride, not forgiving for beginners. It's not the size that's the problem, it's the kind of bike it is.

But 500 or 650cc is not too big to learn on for a 6-footer. It's a little bigger/heavier than a 250 but not that much. It's not a matter of 'too much power'--you don't have to use all that power every minute, and it's nice to have a little power in reserve when you need to pass someone on the freeway. If you're 'mature and responsible' it's not going to be a problem. If not, you can break your neck on a 250 just as easy. 8^)

Models to avoid: Honda CBR, Suzuki GSX-R, Kawasaki Ninja ZX, Yamaha R6. Those are the dedicated sporbikes. They are really wonderful things for what they are, masterpieces of modern engineering. But if you really want one you should see it as something to work up to. Good starter bikes: Honda 599, Suzuki GS 500 or SV 650, Kawsasaki Ninja 500 or 650. These are 'sporty' bikes but still standards, very general-purpose. There are a lot of other good 'standard' models.

If you don't mind cruisers, they have some advantages. Lower center of gravity, so they feel much lighter/smaller than they are. You could start with a 750, like a Honda Shadow 750 or Yamaha Star 750.

College student buying a used BMW / Acura?

I currently drive a 1994 Subaru that i've had since I was 16 that is starting to become rather costly to repair / maintain. I have a part time job and have been saving up for a new car for about a year now and have around $10,000 saved up. I make about $600 a month and am lucky enough to have my parents footing the bill / living expenses. I will be making more in the summer as I intend to take up tutoring or even apply for a summer undergraduate lab instructor position (and taking more hours as well). That should boost my monthly income closer to $1000 a month during the summer.

I am thinking of getting either a 2003 BMW 325i or a 2005 Acura TL (which would be sold by my mom's boyfriend), both for probably around $7,000 or lower. My question is, would the BMW or the Acura be too much to maintain at this stage? I'd be paying for maintenance and the car itself, the insurance will be under my parent's plan. I also intend to take the BMW and independent mechanic and to do the minor things myself if I purchase it, hopefully avoiding the price gouging dealership.

I intend to go to graduate school after I finish my undergrad and am going to be graduating soon, so I'd like to get something nice for myself given I'll have another 4 years of schooling to go through (though that will be paid for as PhD programs are funded in my field).

A: Honda Unicorn is a smoother bike to run and will have lesser maintenance cost unless it is badly used. You will also get better mileage from the Unicorn. But the high end performance will be better in FZ and ride quality will be better as well.

Go for FZ if you love its looks and high end performance along with with zipping zapping rides.
Go for CB Unicorn if you want a smooth engine and decent city rides.

severe 97 ford 7.3 turbo problem?

Q: truck ia a 97 ford f350 with 7.3 LT turbo with around 80k miles on it.
One minute the truck has all kinds of power and runs very well the next minute it nearly stalls and puts out a little bit of smoke. it will sit and idle as long as I would like and I have had no trouble starting it. there is no check engine light on and their are no stored fault codes. Also drained, flushed and refilled entire fuel system and stored truck in warm garage over night. (just in case it was gelling up) the fuel and air filters have been changed without any change. All fluids are at proper level and clear. I can not bring it to a disile shop as the nearest one would require a 150 mile tow. from what I have seen online it is not the famous cam shaft sensor as the truck easily starts. I also doubt the injectors are bad because when it wants to the truck runs very well. any other ideas would be very welcome. ps, any good links for a good picture of the fuel injector wiring connectors would also be help full. Thank you very much.

Sorry, To answer your question, this is a common problem with the 7.3L with this type of complaint! You have a restricted (clogged) EBP (exhaust back pressure) sensor tube!
TO TEST:
Wire the Exhaust Pressure Regulator (EPR) valve open and drive the vehicle.
If the problem is gone, remove the wire and disconnect the EPR solenoid (2 wire connector near the top of the turbo with a Black/Pink (BK/PK) and Gray/Red (GY/RD) wire). Drive the vehicle again and see if the problem is present. If so, suspect a faulty EPR solenoid or problem in the turbo pedestal.

A: Top speed: About 35-45mph depending on what year it was made, which is about 56-72kph. With your weight, you'll be towards the higher speeds. Most of us here in the US weigh about 200lbs at around 5'7 - 6.

Great daily commuter if going 6kms to and from each day. Great fuel economy.

With a Performance Variator, speed will increase by 3mph (5kph). It is recommended that the first mods for a stock Ruckus is to get a Variator and a cdi unit.

Hypothetically speaking, yes it can go past 80kph, but thats only if you do some upgrades and modding such as a motor swap, variator, cdi unit, exhaust, etc. But in its stock form, thats a definite no. However, with the variator, cdi, and a new exhaust, you should gain about 9mph (14kph).

With a 1.3gallon tank and a fuel economy of 114mpg, you should get 148.2miles, which is about 238.5kms.

Yes, the Honda Ruckus is very reliable. Honda is well known for producing very reliable vehicles.

Personally, I think that the Ruckus is a great scooter to ride around. Sure it's not the fastest out there, but what sets it apart from other motor scooters is its huge aftermarket. The mods you can do to it are endless. However, keep in mind that it will cost a lot of money to mod your Ruckus. Also, I highly recommend going on the Ruckus forums such as totalruckus.com. The forums are filled with a lot of helpful info and lots of other people that own a Ruckus willing to help out new owners.

Q: I drive a 1999 jeep Cherokee sport and I tried to brake but the brake light came on and
I hydroplaned across snow ran into my house and the wall was pushed in a little and there was a dent in my front bumper.
My Mom doesn't believe that I was going slow. She thinks i had to have been "flying" up the driveway to cause that amount of damage but she doesn't believe me. I told her going 5-10 in a car as heavy and a flat front like the jeep would Definetely be capable of doing such damage.

A: haha definitely yes. you could damage a house by just coasting in Drive without even accelerating. explain to your mom that Jeeps are like tanks. they take minimal damage but can deal max damage with almost no effort

example: in my old jeep, i was at a stop light. got rear ended by a honda civic. jeep was undamaged, civic was totalled.

A: Prices for that generation (2004-2010) 5 Series, excluding the M5, range from about $14,000 for an older one with high miles, to about $42,000 for a newer one with low miles. Either way that is a lot of money for a first car, but if you're willing to work for it (or are lucky enough to have rich parents) then it is not out of reach.

However, there are some things you should know, especially if you're going to be paying for (or helping to pay) the maintenance, insurance, and repairs. The 5 Series, BMW's, and German cars in general are very expensive to own. Routine maintenance is more expensive, and they tend to need more repairs than Asian and American cars, and they are more expensive to repair as well.

Edmunds.com has a great tool called "true cost to own", which takes data supplied to them by owners, and tells you the average cost to own a specific vehicle 5 years.

It's TCO over is $55,145, meaning that over 5 years it will cost you that amount on top of the price you pay for it.

Over 5 years it's $42,118. That's over $13,000 cheaper than the BMW!!! And look at the difference in the maintenance and repairs category!

The Infiniti has all the good qualities of the BMW (it's luxurious and great to drive), they cost about the same to buy, but the Infiniti costs MUCH less to own. How long are you planning on keeping it? If the trends from the 5 year TCO continue (which more than likely they will), over 10 years the Infiniti will save you about $26,000! Think of it this way: that $26,000 you save can buy, or be put towards your next car!

I think you can see what I'm getting at. I completely understand you for wanting a nice car (I mean, don't we all?), and if it's within your reach there is no reason why you shouldn't get one. You're also being smart about it by considering insurance and other costs.

I would recommend the Infiniti G and M range, and the Acura TL and TSX. They are all great luxury sports sedans/coupes that are similar to the 5 Series, but just happen to cost a lot less to own. Lexus's are also similarly cheap to own, but I'm guessing they wouldn't appeal to you. BMW's are sporty and fun to drive, which I'm guessing is part of the reason you want one. Lexus's... just aren't. The current generation Cadillac CTS is also worth considering. It's been on Car and Driver's "10 Best" list for 3 or 4 years now, and the CTS-V is faster than the M3 and M5 around the Nurburgring, so it's a damn good drive. It's also better rated than BMW and Audi in quality by J.D. Powers. It's TCO is $50,000, so it's in between the BMW/Germans and the Japanese ones for cost to own.

Can some cars really last forever?

A: Well the answer is yes and no. Being that a car is nothing but a machine that means that eventually it will break down. So the answer is then no...A car cannot last forever. However if your willing to spend money to keep the car going and your going to drive it very little or any at all then the answer is yes, your car can last forever. If your like the average person who buys a Honda or another car that is valued for its reliability and with proper maintenance then your car can last a VERY long time. Its not uncommon to have Honda's, Toyotas', Volvo's or Mercedes Benz lasting well into the 250,000+ mile range or longer.
